Long Division with Steps Calculator
Divide whole numbers the long way and see every bring-down, multiply and subtract step laid out in a table.
How it works
At each digit: working value = 10·previous remainder + next digit · quotient digit = ⌊working ÷ divisor⌋ · remainder = working − quotient digit·divisor
Long division works one digit at a time. Bring down the next digit of the dividend to form a working value, find how many times the divisor fits into it (the quotient digit), subtract that multiple, and carry the remainder into the next step. The quotient digits, read left to right, form the answer, and whatever is left at the end is the final remainder.
Worked example
For 1274 ÷ 7: 1 ÷ 7 = 0 r 1; bring down 2 → 12 ÷ 7 = 1 r 5; bring down 7 → 57 ÷ 7 = 8 r 1; bring down 4 → 14 ÷ 7 = 2 r 0. Reading the quotient digits gives 0182 = 182 with remainder 0, and indeed 7 × 182 = 1274.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between the quotient and the remainder?
The quotient is how many whole times the divisor fits into the dividend; the remainder is what is left over and is always smaller than the divisor. Together they satisfy divisor × quotient + remainder = dividend.
Why do some quotient digits come out as zero?
When the current working value is smaller than the divisor, the divisor fits in zero times, so the quotient digit is 0 and you bring down the next digit. Leading zeros are dropped from the final quotient.
Does this work with decimals?
This calculator divides whole numbers and reports a quotient and remainder. To continue into decimal places you would add a decimal point and keep bringing down zeros; the exact value shown gives that decimal result directly.
