How it works

Score = exercise (25) + sleep (20) + diet (20) non-smoking (15) + alcohol (10) + social (10), each scaled to its evidence-based target

Large cohort studies consistently link a handful of everyday habits — regular activity, sufficient sleep, a produce-rich diet, not smoking, moderate alcohol and strong social ties — to more healthy years of life. This tracker turns each into a sub-score capped at its own weight, so no single habit can dominate, and sums them to 100. It is a directional self-check to spot your weakest lever, not a clinical risk model.

Worked example

With 150 min exercise (25), 7.5 hrs sleep (17.5), 5 servings produce (20), non-smoking (15), 3 drinks (7.9) and 5 social days (10), the total is about 95 of 100 — an "Excellent" pattern.

Frequently asked questions

How are the weights chosen?

They reflect the relative strength and consistency of the evidence — activity, sleep and diet carry the most weight, with not smoking a large binary factor. The exact points are a simplification, so focus on the direction, not the decimal.

Why does 8 hours score best for sleep?

Risk curves for sleep are U-shaped: both short and very long sleep associate with worse outcomes, with the low point around 7–8 hours for most adults. The score peaks at 8 and tapers either side.

Is any alcohol really fine?

Current evidence increasingly favours less alcohol, so the score is highest at zero and falls as weekly drinks rise. Treat the alcohol points as encouragement to keep intake low.
