How it works

Total tequila = drinks × oz per drink · Lime & liqueur = tequila × their ratio fraction · Bottles = ml ÷ 750

A margarita is a ratio drink: tequila, lime and orange liqueur in a fixed proportion, so batching for a party is just multiplication. The classic 3:2:1 pour (three parts tequila, two lime, one triple sec) is bright and tart; a 2:1:1 pour is a touch sweeter and rounder. A Tommy's Margarita drops the liqueur entirely and sweetens with agave, letting a good tequila shine. Always juice limes fresh — bottled lime juice tastes flat and slightly bitter — and hold ice separately so a pre-batched pitcher does not dilute before guests arrive.

Worked example

For 12 classic (3:2:1) margaritas at 1.5 oz tequila each: tequila = 12 × 1.5 = 18 oz (about 0.7 of a 750 ml bottle); lime = 18 × ⅔ = 12 oz (roughly 12 limes); triple sec = 18 × ⅓ = 6 oz.

Frequently asked questions

How much lime juice does one lime give?

A typical fresh lime yields about 1 oz (2 tablespoons) of juice, though it varies with size and ripeness. Rolling the lime firmly on the counter and juicing it at room temperature gets the most out of it. This tool assumes roughly 1 oz per lime when it estimates how many to buy.

Can I batch margaritas ahead of time?

Yes. Mix the tequila, lime and liqueur (or agave) in a pitcher and refrigerate; because there is no carbonation, it holds well for a day. Add ice, salt the rims and, if you like, a small splash of water to mimic shaking only when you serve, so the batch does not go watery.

What is the difference between triple sec and Cointreau?

Both are orange liqueurs. Generic triple sec is usually lower in alcohol and sweeter, while Cointreau (and Grand Marnier) are stronger, drier and more aromatic. Any of them works in these ratios; a higher-quality orange liqueur noticeably lifts the finished drink.
