Punch Batch Scaling Calculator
Scale a party punch to any headcount using the classic one-of-sour, two-of-sweet, three-of-strong, four-of-weak formula, with amounts in cups, litres and bottles.
How it works
Total = guests × drinks × serving size · Each part = total ÷ (sum of parts) · Component = part × each part
The old rhyme "one of sour, two of sweet, three of strong, four of weak" is a complete punch recipe hiding as poetry. Sour is citrus, sweet is syrup or liqueur, strong is the base spirit, and weak is water, tea or sparkling mixer that stretches the batch and controls strength. Because it is a ratio, it scales to any crowd: work out the total volume you need, split it into ten parts, and pour by the part. Add the weak component and ice last so the punch does not sit watered-down before the party starts.
Worked example
For 20 guests at 2 drinks of 4 oz each, total = 20 × 2 × 4 = 160 oz. Classic 1:2:3:4 sums to 10 parts, so each part is 16 oz. That is 16 oz sour, 32 oz sweet, 48 oz strong (about 1.9 × 750 ml bottles) and 64 oz weak.
Frequently asked questions
How much punch should I make per person?
Plan on about two servings per guest for the first hour and roughly one per hour after that. A common party pour is 4 oz for a ladled punch. This calculator multiplies guests by drinks by serving size so you can dial those assumptions to your event.
When do I add the ice and the fizzy mixer?
Add sparkling water, soda or Champagne and a large block of ice right before serving. A big single block melts far more slowly than cubes, so it chills the bowl without watering it down. Building the fizzy "weak" portion early flattens the bubbles.
Can I make a non-alcoholic version?
Yes — keep the same 1:2:3:4 structure but replace the "strong" spirit with strong brewed tea, kombucha or a spiced syrup base, and lean on citrus and sparkling water. The ratio still balances tart, sweet and dilution for a punch that tastes composed rather than like flat juice.
