How it works

Market share = your sales ÷ total market sales × 100 · Competitor share = competitor sales ÷ market × 100 · Relative market share = your sales ÷ largest competitor's sales · Sales per share point = total market ÷ 100

Market share is your slice of all sales in a defined market over the same period — by revenue (value share) or by units (volume share). Defining the market carefully matters more than the arithmetic: the same company can hold 2% of "beverages" and 40% of "cold brew in one city". Relative market share compares you with the largest rival and is the axis of the BCG growth-share matrix: above 1 you are the leader. Market totals usually come from industry associations, government statistics or research firms.

Worked example

A company with $2.5 million of sales in a $20 million market has a market share of 2,500,000 ÷ 20,000,000 = 12.50%. Its largest competitor sells $5 million (25.00%), so relative market share is 0.50× — a challenger. Each extra point of share is worth $200,000 in sales.

Frequently asked questions

How do you calculate market share?

Divide your sales by the total sales of the market in the same period and multiply by 100. $2.5 million out of $20 million is 12.5%.

What is relative market share?

Your sales divided by the sales of your largest competitor. 0.5 means the leader is twice your size; above 1 means you are the leader. It is used in the BCG growth-share matrix.

Should I use revenue or units?

Revenue (value) share shows who earns the money; unit (volume) share shows who sells the most items. Premium brands often have a higher value share than volume share. Report which one you use.

Where do I find total market size?

Industry associations, government statistics (census and trade data), listed competitors' reports and paid research. You can also build it bottom-up — customers × spend per customer — with a TAM SAM SOM calculation.
