How it works

1 byte = 8 bits · MB/s = Mbps ÷ 8 · Mbps = MB/s × 8 · decimal prefixes: k = 1,000, M = 1,000,000, G = 10⁹ · MiB/s = bytes per second ÷ 1,048,576

Internet plans and network gear quote speed in bits per second (lower-case b: Mbps), while browsers, game launchers and file managers usually show bytes per second (upper-case B: MB/s). A byte is 8 bits, so divide Mbps by 8 to get MB/s. Some programs show binary mebibytes (MiB, 1,048,576 bytes) but label them “MB”, which makes the number about 4.6% smaller again. Real downloads also lose roughly 5–10% to protocol overhead.

Worked example

A 100 Mbps connection: 100,000,000 bits per second ÷ 8 = 12,500,000 bytes per second = 12.5 MB/s (11.921 MiB/s). Running flat out it could move 12.5 × 3,600 = 45 GB per hour, 32.4 TB in a 30-day month, and 1 GB in 80 seconds (1.33 min).

How many MB/s is 100 Mbps?

12.5 MB/s. Divide megabits per second by 8 to get megabytes per second. 300 Mbps is 37.5 MB/s and 1 Gbps (1,000 Mbps) is 125 MB/s.

What is the difference between Mbps and MBps?

Mbps (small b) is megabits per second, used for internet speeds. MBps or MB/s (capital B) is megabytes per second, used for download and disk speeds. 1 MB/s = 8 Mbps.

Why is my download slower than my plan speed ÷ 8?

Protocol overhead (TCP/IP, encryption) takes about 5–10%, Wi-Fi and the remote server can be the bottleneck, and your app may show MiB/s instead of MB/s. Expect roughly 11 MB/s on a 100 Mbps plan.

Is 1 Gbps equal to 1 GB/s?

No. 1 Gbps is 125 MB/s, or 0.125 GB/s. You would need an 8 Gbps link to move 1 GB per second.

Are these decimal or binary units?

Network speeds always use decimal prefixes (1 Mbps = 1,000,000 bits/s). The MiB/s row shows the binary figure many operating systems display.
