How it works

Take time = bedtime − lead time · Dim-lights time = bedtime − max(lead, 60 min) − 30 min

Melatonin is a timing signal, not a sedative — it works best when taken a short while before your intended bedtime so blood levels rise as you try to fall asleep. Most formulations peak roughly an hour after dosing, so a 30–120 minute lead is common. Dimming bright and blue-rich light in the hour before bed supports your own melatonin release and reinforces the supplement.

Worked example

For a 22:30 (10:30 PM) bedtime with a 60-minute lead, take melatonin at 22:30 − 60 min = 21:30 (9:30 PM), and start dimming lights around 21:00 (9:00 PM).

Frequently asked questions

How much melatonin should I take?

Research often points to low doses (around 0.5–3 mg) being as effective as larger ones for sleep onset, with fewer next-day effects. This tool addresses timing only, not dose — discuss the right amount with a pharmacist or doctor.

Does melatonin work immediately?

No. It is not a knockout pill; it nudges your body toward sleep as levels rise. Taking it too close to bedtime or too early can blunt the effect, which is why a modest lead time helps.

Can I use this for jet lag?

The timing principle applies, but jet lag also involves shifting your whole body clock over several days. The best dosing time then depends on travel direction and destination time, so seek tailored guidance.
