How it works

Saved per meal = meal calories × reduction% · Daily saved = per meal × meals · Weekly loss = daily saved × 7 ÷ kcal-per-unit

Portion sizes have crept upward for decades, and quietly serving yourself a bit less is one of the least painful ways to cut calories because it does not require giving up any food. A modest reduction you barely notice — using a smaller plate, leaving a few bites, skipping the second helping — compounds across every meal and every day. This tool shows that steady arithmetic, which is why small, sustainable trims often beat dramatic diets over the long run.

Worked example

Cutting 20% from three 700 kcal meals saves 140 kcal each, or 420 kcal a day. Over a week that is 2,940 kcal — about 0.84 lb — and roughly 3.6 lb over a month.

Frequently asked questions

Won’t I just feel hungry?

A 10–20% trim is usually below the threshold most people consciously notice, especially eaten slowly. Bulk meals up with vegetables, protein and water so the smaller portion still fills you.

Do smaller plates really help?

For many people, yes — a fixed portion looks more generous on a smaller plate, which can reduce how much you serve and eat. It is a nudge, not a guarantee, and works best paired with attention to fullness.

Is losing under a pound a week worth it?

Very much so. Slow loss is easier to sustain and less likely to trigger the rebound that fast diets cause. Under a pound a week still adds up to double digits over a year.
