Minecraft Nether Portal Coordinates Calculator (Overworld ↔ Nether Linking)
Link Nether portals correctly: convert Overworld coordinates to Nether coordinates (÷ 8) and back, check whether a new portal will link to the one you intend or an existing one within the game's search range, work out the Nether-side distance and travel time saved between two Overworld bases, and count the obsidian for the portal frames.
How it works
Nether X = floor(Overworld X ÷ 8), Nether Z = floor(Overworld Z ÷ 8) · Overworld = Nether × 8 · distance = √(ΔX² + ΔZ²) · sprint ≈ 5.6 blocks/s; blue-ice boat ≈ 40 blocks/s · the game links to an existing portal within 16 blocks (Nether) / 128 blocks (Overworld) of the converted point
The Nether is a compressed copy of the Overworld in which every block of horizontal travel counts for eight, so a portal built at an Overworld location corresponds to one at an eighth of its coordinates and a long journey shrinks to a short tunnel between two portals. The game finds the nearest existing portal within a search radius of the converted point, which is what causes portals to link to the wrong place when two Overworld portals are close together or when the game is left to generate the far side itself; building both frames by hand at the exact converted coordinates avoids it. The same ratio gives the tunnel length and the materials for a fast ice-boat lane.
Worked example
A portal at (1240, 64, −3560) needs its Nether twin at X 155, Z −445; a base at (−2800, 900) sits at Nether X −350, Z 112. The bases are about 6,018 blocks apart in the Overworld — nearly 18 minutes of sprinting — but only 752 blocks in the Nether, about 2.2 minutes on foot or under 20 seconds on a blue-ice boat lane. Two minimal portals cost 20 obsidian, and both should be built by hand so neither links to a stray portal.
Frequently asked questions
My new portal keeps sending me to an old one — why?
The old portal is within the search radius of your new portal's converted coordinates (16 blocks on the Nether side, 128 on the Overworld side). Build the Nether-side portal yourself at exactly (X÷8, Z÷8), or move the Overworld portals at least 128 blocks apart.
Does Y matter?
Only a little — the game keeps Y roughly the same but will place a portal wherever there is room in a vertical column. For tunnels, choose the Nether Y yourself: the roof (Java, Y 128+) or a safe level above the lava lakes.
