How it works

n × k for k = start … end · chart cell (row i, column j) = i × j · diagonal = square numbers i²

A multiplication table lists the products of one number with a run of whole numbers — the classic school tables go from 1 to 10 or 1 to 12. Times tables are repeated addition: each product is the previous one plus n, which is why the multiples of 7 climb 7, 14, 21, 28…. The full chart shows every product of the numbers in a range; it is symmetric about its diagonal because multiplication is commutative (3 × 8 = 8 × 3), and the diagonal itself holds the square numbers 1, 4, 9, 16….

Worked example

The times table of 7 from 1 to 12 gives the multiples 7, 14, 21, 28, 35, 42, 49, 56, 63, 70, 77, 84. The last fact is 7 × 12 = 84, there are 12 facts, and the products add up to 546 (7 × 78, since 1 + 2 + … + 12 = 78).

Frequently asked questions

What is the fastest way to learn the times tables?

Learn the easy anchors first (×1, ×2, ×5, ×10), then use commutativity: knowing 3 × 8 gives you 8 × 3 for free, which halves the facts to memorise. Short daily practice with spaced repetition works better than long sessions.

Why do school tables go to 12?

Twelve was common in older measurement systems (12 inches, 12 pence, a dozen), so tables to 12 became the tradition in many countries. Many curricula now stop at 10; this tool lets you choose any range.

Can I make a table for decimals or negative numbers?

Yes. Enter any number such as 2.5 or −4 and the calculator lists its multiples over the range you choose.

What patterns help with the 9 times table?

For 9 × k (k up to 10) the tens digit is k − 1 and the two digits add up to 9: 9 × 7 = 63, and 6 + 3 = 9.
