Square and Cube Calculator
Find the square and the cube of any number at once, along with its square root and cube root.
How it works
Square = n × n = n² · Cube = n × n × n = n³
Squaring a number multiplies it by itself once, giving the area of a square with that side length; cubing multiplies it by itself twice, giving the volume of a cube with that edge length. The square is always non-negative, but the cube keeps the sign of the original number, so a negative input has a negative cube.
Worked example
7 squared is 7 × 7 = 49, and 7 cubed is 7 × 7 × 7 = 343. Its square root is about 2.6458 and its cube root about 1.9129.
Frequently asked questions
Why is the square of a negative number positive?
Multiplying two negative numbers gives a positive result, so (−4)² = 16. The cube, however, multiplies three negatives, so (−4)³ = −64 stays negative.
What is a perfect square or perfect cube?
A perfect square is a whole number that is the square of an integer (1, 4, 9, 16, …); a perfect cube is the cube of an integer (1, 8, 27, 64, …). You can spot them here when the square root or cube root comes out whole.
Can I square or cube a decimal?
Yes. For example 1.5² = 2.25 and 1.5³ = 3.375. The calculator accepts any decimal input.
