Music Streaming Royalty Calculator (Per-Stream Rates, Splits & Streams Needed)
Estimate what your streams pay: earnings from Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube Music, Amazon Music, Tidal and Deezer at typical per-stream rates, after your distributor's cut and the split with co-writers, band members or a label, the streams needed to hit an income target, and what a million streams is worth on each service.
How it works
earnings = Σ streams on platform × platform rate (Spotify ≈ $0.0035, Apple ≈ $0.0075, YouTube Music ≈ $0.002, Amazon ≈ $0.004, Tidal/Deezer ≈ $0.01) · net = gross × (1 − distributor %) × (1 − label %) ÷ people · streams needed = target ÷ net per stream
Streaming services do not pay a fixed fee per play; they pool subscription and advertising revenue and divide it by share of total streams, which averages out to a fraction of a cent per stream that differs by service, by country and by whether the listener pays, so a blended rate across the platforms where a song is actually played is the honest basis for an estimate. From that gross, the distributor, any label and the people who share the master each take their slice, leaving a per-stream figure that turns an income goal into a stream count — usually a sobering one — and the songwriters' publishing royalties arrive separately through collection societies.
Worked example
Fifty thousand monthly streams split 60% Spotify, 15% Apple, 15% YouTube Music, 5% Amazon and 5% other earn about $211 gross — a blended 0.42¢ per stream; with a flat-fee distributor and no label, one artist keeps all of it. Earning $2,000 a month at that mix would take about 473,000 streams a month, and a million streams is worth roughly $4,225. Registering the songs with a PRO would add around $32 a month in publishing on the same plays.
Frequently asked questions
Why is my Spotify rate lower than $0.0035?
Rates are an outcome, not a price: free-tier listeners, low-ARPU countries, family-plan users and month-to-month pool changes all pull the average down (often to $0.002–0.003), while premium listeners in the US/UK/Nordics push it up. Since 2024 tracks under 1,000 annual streams earn nothing on Spotify.
How do the co-writers get paid?
Through publishing, not this calculator: performance royalties via a PRO and mechanicals via the MLC or a publisher, split by the writer shares registered on the song. Master royalties (these numbers) go to whoever owns the recording — often the same people, but by a separate agreement.
