How it works

Revenue = (views ÷ 1,000) × RPM · Implied CPM = RPM ÷ 0.55 (creator keeps 55% of ad revenue)

RPM (revenue per mille) is the money you actually keep for every 1,000 views, already net of YouTube’s 45% share of ad income and of non-monetized views. That makes it the honest number to plan around — unlike CPM, which is what advertisers pay before the platform takes its cut. Multiply your view count by RPM and divide by 1,000, and you have your AdSense estimate; other income (memberships, Super Thanks, sponsorships) sits on top of this.

Worked example

A channel gets 100,000 monthly views with an RPM of $4. Revenue is 100,000 ÷ 1,000 × $4 = $400 per month, or roughly $4,800 a year. Working backwards, that $4 RPM implies an advertiser CPM near $4 ÷ 0.55 ≈ $7.27.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between CPM and RPM?

CPM is what advertisers pay per 1,000 ad impressions; RPM is what you keep per 1,000 video views after YouTube’s 45% cut and after unmonetized views are counted. RPM is always lower and is the figure to budget from.

What RPM should I expect?

It swings enormously by niche and audience country — finance, tech and business channels often see $7–$15+, while gaming or entertainment aimed at younger, non-US viewers can sit below $2. Use your own YouTube Analytics RPM for the truest estimate.

Does this include sponsorships and memberships?

No. This estimates only AdSense ad revenue. Sponsorships, channel memberships, Super Thanks and affiliate income are separate streams you would add on top.
