How it works

Future net worth = current × (1 + r)^n + annual savings × ((1 + r)^n − 1) ÷ r

Net worth grows from two engines: the new money you add each year and the compounding returns on everything already invested. Early on your contributions dominate, but as the balance builds, growth from returns takes over — often exceeding what you add each year. Projecting forward shows how a steady savings habit plus patience can turn a modest starting point into substantial wealth.

Worked example

From $100,000 today, saving $20,000 a year at a 6% return, after 20 years you have 100,000 × 1.06^20 + 20,000 × (1.06^20 − 1) ÷ 0.06 ≈ $1,056,000. Of that, $400,000 was contributed and roughly $556,000 came from growth.

Frequently asked questions

Is this in today’s dollars or future dollars?

By default it is in future (nominal) dollars. To see the result in today’s purchasing power, use a growth rate net of inflation — for example 4% instead of 7% — which keeps the projection in real terms.

What growth rate is realistic?

It depends on your asset mix. A diversified portfolio has historically returned around 7% nominal (roughly 4%–5% after inflation), but individual net worth also includes home equity, cash and debt, which move differently. Use a blended, conservative figure.

Does net worth include my home?

Yes — net worth is all assets (investments, home equity, cash, vehicles) minus all liabilities (mortgage, loans, credit cards). This projection treats your whole net worth as growing at one blended rate, so adjust the rate if a large share is in non-appreciating assets.
