Percent of a Number Calculator
Work out what a given percentage of a number is — for example 15% of 200 — with the plain-decimal method shown.
How it works
Result = (Percent ÷ 100) × Number
A percentage is just a fraction out of 100, so "percent of a number" means multiplying the number by that fraction. Converting the percent to a decimal — dividing by 100 — turns the phrase directly into a multiplication. This is the building block behind tips, discounts, tax and commission calculations.
Worked example
15% of 200: convert 15% to the decimal 0.15, then multiply by 200 to get 30.
Frequently asked questions
How do I turn a percent into a decimal?
Divide by 100, which moves the decimal point two places left. 15% becomes 0.15 and 7.5% becomes 0.075.
How do I find what percent one number is of another?
Divide the part by the whole and multiply by 100. For instance 30 out of 200 is 30 ÷ 200 × 100 = 15%.
Can the percent be over 100?
Yes. 150% of 200 is 1.5 × 200 = 300 — percentages above 100% simply represent more than the whole.
