How it works

percentile rank = (count below + ½·count equal) ÷ n × 100

The percentile rank of a value tells you the fraction of a data set that falls at or below it. This calculator uses the mid-rank convention: values strictly below x count fully, and values tying x count half, which centres the score fairly on the observed value. It is the inverse of picking a percentile — here you already know the value and want its standing.

Worked example

In 55, 60, 62, 68, 70, 72, 75, 80, 85, 90 the value 72 has 5 numbers below it and 1 equal to it. Percentile rank = (5 + 0.5×1) ÷ 10 × 100 = 55%, so 72 sits at roughly the 55th percentile.

Frequently asked questions

Why use half-credit for ties?

The mid-rank (or “mean rank”) method splits the tie so a value is not penalised or inflated by exact matches. It gives the value the average position among equal observations, which keeps percentile ranks symmetric and consistent.

How is this different from the percentile calculator?

This tool starts from a value and returns its percentile. A percentile calculator does the reverse — you give it a percentile (say the 90th) and it returns the value at that position in the data.

Does the data need to be sorted first?

No. The calculation only counts how many values fall below, above, or equal to your target, so order does not matter. Sorting simply helps you eyeball the result.
