How it works

Percentile rank = (values below + ½ · values equal) ÷ total values × 100%

A percentile rank tells you where a value stands within a group by giving the percentage of the data that falls at or below it. The midpoint method counts everything strictly below the value plus half of any ties, which centres the rank fairly when duplicates exist. A percentile rank of 90 means the value sits near the top — only about a tenth of the data is higher.

Worked example

In the set 55, 62, 68, 71, 74, 78, 82, 85, 90, 95, the value 78 has 5 numbers below it and 1 equal to it out of 10. Percentile rank = (5 + 0.5 · 1) ÷ 10 × 100% = 55% — the value sits at the 55th percentile.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a percentile and a percentile rank?

A percentile is a value (the 90th percentile score might be 88 points), while a percentile rank is the position of a given value expressed as a percentage. This calculator takes a value and returns its rank.

Why add half of the tied values?

The midpoint method splits ties evenly so a value is not unfairly credited with beating identical scores. It gives a rank exactly in the middle of the tied group, which is the convention used in most testing and psychometrics.

Can the percentile rank be 0 or 100?

With the midpoint method the lowest value gets a small positive rank and the highest falls just below 100, because ties count for half. If you prefer the "percent at or below" figure shown as a secondary result, the top value reaches 100%.
