How it works
score % = correct ÷ total × 100 · with negative marking: (correct × points per right − wrong × penalty) ÷ (total × points per right) × 100 · minimum correct for a letter = ⌈(cutoff% × maximum marks + attempted × penalty) ÷ (points per right + penalty)⌉
The percentage is the share of questions answered correctly. Enter the number right — or the number wrong, which is often what is written on the paper — and the total, and pick the grading scale your teacher uses: the simple 10-point scale many US classrooms use for tests (90+ A, 80–89 B, 70–79 C, 60–69 D, below 60 F), the plus/minus scale, the stricter 7-point scale, or your own cutoffs. The grading table lists the score and letter for every possible number wrong, so a teacher can mark a stack of papers without re-entering anything, and a second table shows the fewest correct answers (and most misses) for each letter. Under More options you can add unanswered questions and negative marking — +4 for a right answer and −1 for a wrong one, as on NEET and JEE Main — and the calculator shows the marks, the percentage and the break-even point for guessing. Paste a list of number-correct scores to grade a whole class: you get the average, median, spread, pass rate and how many students got each letter.
Worked example
42 correct out of 50: 42 ÷ 50 × 100 = 84.0% — a B on the 10-point scale, with 8 wrong answers at 2 points each. You could miss up to 5 and still get an A (45 correct). On a NEET-style paper with 180 questions, +4/−1 marking, 150 right, 20 wrong and 10 left blank: 150 × 4 − 20 × 1 = 580 of 720 marks, or 80.6%.
Frequently asked questions
How many can I miss and still get an A?
On the 90% line you can miss up to 10% of the questions: 5 on a 50-question test, 10 on a 100-question test. The “Most you can miss” result and the minimum-correct table give the exact number for your test and scale.
What about partial credit?
Enter points instead of questions — points earned as “correct” and points possible as “total”. Fractions such as 42.5 are fine; the math is identical.
How does negative marking change my score?
Each wrong answer subtracts the penalty from your marks, while a blank costs nothing. With +4/−1 marking, a wrong answer is 5 marks worse than a right one, and guessing only pays if you are more than 20% sure — roughly when you can rule out one of four options.
Does this match my teacher’s grading scale?
Only if they use the same cutoffs. Choose the plus/minus or 7-point scale, or type your teacher’s cutoffs (such as “A 94, B 86, C 75, D 65”) under “My own cutoffs”.
Can I grade a whole class at once?
Yes. Under More options, paste one student per line with the number correct (“Maya 47”). The calculator scores each student on your scale and shows the class average, median, highest and lowest scores, pass rate and a chart of letter grades.
