How it works
required = (target − current × (1 − w)) ÷ w · course grade = current × (1 − w) + final × w · points class: w = final points ÷ all points
Your course grade is the current grade weighted at (1 − w) plus the final exam weighted at w. Solving for the exam score gives the formula above; the result is rounded up to one decimal so that score really reaches the target. If it comes out above 100%, no exam score reaches the target at that weight; at or below zero, the target is locked in before you sit the exam. The tables show the score you need for every letter grade, the course grade each final score would give you, and how the answer changes with the final’s weight. Switch to "What’s my grade?" once you know your exam score, or to the points mode if your class adds up points instead of using weights.
Worked example
Current grade 88%, final worth 30%, target 90%: required = (90 − 88×0.70) ÷ 0.30 = (90 − 61.6) ÷ 0.30 = 94.7%. A 94.7% final gets you to 90%, a 100% final to 91.6%, and keeping a B+ (87%) needs only 84.7%. In a points class with 704 of 800 points and a 200-point final, a 90% needs 900 − 704 = 196 of the 200 points (98%).
Frequently asked questions
What if my final can replace a midterm score too?
Some syllabi let the final overwrite a lower midterm, which effectively raises the final’s weight. Re-run the numbers with the combined weight of everything the exam can replace.
The required score is 102% — is there anything I can do?
Not through the final alone. Look for extra credit, regrade requests on earlier work, or dropped-assignment policies — or aim for the best grade that is reachable: the letter table shows which grades are still in reach and the "if you score 100%" line shows the ceiling.
My class uses points, not percentages — how do I find the final’s weight?
Pick "Points class" and enter the points you have earned, the points possible so far and the points the final is worth. The final’s weight is its points divided by all the points in the course — 200 of 1,000 is 20% — and the calculator also shows how many of those points you need.
What score do I need just to pass?
The results always include the score needed to reach the passing grade, 60% by default. Change the passing grade under More options if your course or program uses 65% or 70%.
Does this work for a final project instead of an exam?
Yes — the math only cares about the weight. Any single remaining graded item works, as long as everything else is already scored. For several items still to come, use the weighted grade calculator and mark them as not graded.
