How it works
GPA = Σ(grade points × credits) ÷ Σ(credits)
Each letter grade converts to points on the 4.0 scale (A = 4.0, A− = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, and so on down to F = 0). Every course contributes its points times its credit hours, so a 4-credit A moves your GPA more than a 1-credit A. The GPA is the credit-weighted average, which is why heavy courses dominate the result.
Worked example
Four 3-credit courses graded A, A−, B+ and B: grade points = 4.0×3 + 3.7×3 + 3.3×3 + 3.0×3 = 42.0 over 12 credits, so GPA = 42 ÷ 12 = 3.50.
Frequently asked questions
Do pass/fail courses count in GPA?
At most US schools, no — a "Pass" earns credit but no grade points, so it neither helps nor hurts GPA. Leave those courses set to "not taken" here.
Why does my school show a different GPA?
Point values vary slightly: some schools give A and A+ both 4.0, others award 4.3 for A+, and a few skip minus grades entirely. This calculator uses the most common 4.0 scale — check your registrar’s table for the exact mapping.
What GPA do I need for honors?
Typical US cutoffs are 3.5 for cum laude-level honors and around 3.7–3.9 for the higher tiers, but every school sets its own lines and some rank by percentile instead.
