How it works
Weighted grade = (score₁×w₁ + score₂×w₂ + score₃×w₃) ÷ (w₁ + w₂ + w₃)
A weighted grade multiplies each score by its share of the course, then adds the pieces. A 40% final counts twice as much as a 20% homework category, so the same exam score can swing the course grade very differently depending on its weight. The weights must cover the whole course — 100% in total.
Worked example
Homework 92% at 30% weight, midterm 84% at 30%, final 88% at 40%: grade = 92×0.30 + 84×0.30 + 88×0.40 = 27.6 + 25.2 + 35.2 = 88.0%.
Frequently asked questions
My syllabus lists points, not percentages — what do I enter?
Convert each category to a percent of the course first: a 200-point exam in a 1,000-point course is a 20% weight, and your score within the category is points earned ÷ points possible × 100.
What if a category isn’t graded yet?
Either re-scale the remaining weights to 100% for a "grade so far", or use the final grade calculator to see what score the ungraded piece needs.
Why do the weights have to total 100%?
The weights describe how the whole course is divided. If they total 90%, some part of the grade is unaccounted for and the average would be computed against the wrong base — the calculator flags anything outside 99–101%.
