How it works
US plus/minus: A 93+, A− 90, B+ 87, B 83, B− 80, C+ 77, C 73, C− 70, D+ 67, D 63, D− 60, F below 60 · percentage = points earned ÷ points possible × 100
This is the most common plus/minus scale at US schools: each letter covers a 3–4 point band, and the letters map to GPA points (A = 4.0, A− = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, down to F = 0). Scores above 100% — extra credit — still count as the top grade. Schools shift the lines, so you can switch to an A+ band at 97, straight 10-point letters (90/80/70/60), the stricter 7-point scale (93/85/77/70), UK degree classes, the Indian 10-point O/A+/A scale, or type your own cutoffs. Enter a raw score like 44 out of 50 and the calculator turns it into a percentage first and shows the minimum points for every letter on that test. Whether 89.5 rounds up to 90 is your teacher’s call; the rounding switch shows both readings.
Worked example
An 88% falls in the 87–89 band, so it is a B+ worth 3.3 grade points — exactly 2 points short of the A− line at 90%. As a points score, 44 out of 50 is 44 ÷ 50 × 100 = 88%, the same B+; one more point (45/50 = 90%) would make it an A−. On a 7-point scale the same 88% is a B, and on a straight 10-point scale it is also a B.
Frequently asked questions
Is a 92.5% an A− or an A?
On the standard scale, an A− — the A band starts at 93. Some teachers round 92.5 up to 93; whether .5 rounds up is a syllabus decision, not a rule. Turn on rounding under More options to see the rounded grade.
Do all schools use plus/minus grades?
No. Plenty of high schools and some colleges use straight letters in 10-point bands (90+ A, 80+ B, …), and some districts use a 7-point scale where 93 is the A line and 70 the lowest pass. Pick the matching scale, or enter your own cutoffs if your syllabus differs.
How do I turn a test score like 17/20 into a letter grade?
Choose "Points earned / possible" and enter 17 and 20: 17 ÷ 20 × 100 = 85%, a B on the standard scale. The table then lists the minimum points out of 20 for each letter, so you can see that 18 points (90%) would have been an A−.
Why is there no A+ in the standard table?
Many schools don’t award A+, and most that do still cap it at 4.0 grade points. Where it exists it typically starts at 97% — pick one of the A+ scales, with 4.0 or 4.3 points.
What do UK degree classes mean in percentages?
A First is usually 70% or more, an upper second (2:1) 60–69%, a lower second (2:2) 50–59% and a Third 40–49%; below 40% is a fail. The class is normally based on a weighted average of later-year modules.
