How it works
A 93+, A− 90, B+ 87, B 83, B− 80, C+ 77, C 73, C− 70, D+ 67, D 63, D− 60, F below 60
This is the most common plus/minus scale at US schools: each letter covers a 3–4 point band, and the letters map to GPA points (A = 4.0, A− = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, down to F = 0). Scores above 100% — extra credit — still count as an A. Individual schools shift the lines slightly, so treat the table as the default, not a law.
Worked example
An 88% falls in the 87–89 band, so it is a B+ worth 3.3 grade points — exactly 2 points short of the A− line at 90%.
Frequently asked questions
Is a 92.5% an A− or an A?
On this scale, an A− — the A band starts at 93. Some teachers round 92.5 up to 93; whether .5 rounds up is a syllabus decision, not a rule.
Do all schools use plus/minus grades?
No. Plenty of high schools and some colleges use straight letters in 10-point bands (90+ A, 80+ B, …), and a few use 7-point bands where 93 is the B/A line. Check your syllabus.
Why is there no A+ row?
Many schools don’t award A+, and most that do still cap it at 4.0 grade points. Where it exists it typically starts at 97%.
