CGPA Calculator (Grade Points and Credits)

Calculate CGPA on a 10-point scale from course grades and credits or from semester SGPAs — accepts grade points, letter grades (O, A+, A…) or marks, converts to percentage (×9.5, AICTE, ×10) and finds the SGPA you need for a target CGPA.

How it works

CGPA = Σ(grade point × credits) ÷ Σ credits · from semesters: Σ(SGPA × semester credits) ÷ Σ credits · % = CGPA × 9.5 (CBSE) or (CGPA − 0.75) × 10 (AICTE)

Each course’s grade point is weighted by its credits, so a 4-credit core subject moves the CGPA more than a 2-credit elective. Most Indian universities follow the UGC choice-based credit system: a 10-point scale where O = 10, A+ = 9, A = 8, B+ = 7, B = 6, C = 5 and P = 4 is the minimum pass, and a failed course carries 0 points while its credits still count until cleared. You can type grade points, the letter grades themselves (CBSE A1…E also work) or marks, which are mapped to points with the common 90/80/70/60/50/45/40 bands. Already have semester results? Switch to semester SGPAs and enter each SGPA with its credits. The percentage uses the formula you choose — CBSE’s ×9.5, AICTE’s (CGPA − 0.75) × 10 or a plain ×10 — because universities do not agree on one rule.

Worked example

Points 9, 8, 10, 7, 8, 9 with credits 4, 3, 3, 4, 2, 3: 36 + 24 + 30 + 28 + 16 + 27 = 161 grade points over 19 credits, so CGPA = 161 ÷ 19 = 8.47, about 80.5% using ×9.5 or 77.2% using the AICTE formula. With a previous CGPA of 8.00 over 80 credits, the updated CGPA is (640 + 161) ÷ 99 = 8.09.

Frequently asked questions

Can I enter letter grades instead of points?

Yes. Type O, A+, A, B+, B, C, P or F (the UGC 10-point letters) or CBSE grades A1, A2, B1, B2, C1, C2, D and E, and they are converted to 10 down to 0 points. Marks such as 87% are converted with the common 90/80/70/60/50/45/40 bands; if your university uses different bands, type the grade points instead.

How do I convert CGPA to percentage?

Use the formula your board or university publishes. CBSE multiplies by 9.5; AICTE and VTU use (CGPA − 0.75) × 10; GTU uses (CGPA − 0.5) × 10; some universities simply multiply by 10. Pick the matching rule under Percentage conversion, or enter your own multiplier.

Is SGPA calculated the same way?

Yes — SGPA uses the same formula restricted to one semester’s courses. To combine semesters into CGPA, switch to "Semester SGPAs" and enter each SGPA with the credits of that semester; leave the credits blank if your university averages SGPAs equally.

What SGPA do I need to reach a target CGPA?

Turn on "Plan for a target CGPA", enter the CGPA you want and the credits still to come. The calculator shows the SGPA you need on average, the best CGPA you could still reach and a table of final CGPAs for SGPAs from 6 to 10.

Do failed courses count in CGPA?

Usually yes until you clear them: an F carries 0 points but its credits stay in the total, which pulls the CGPA down. After you pass a re-examination, most universities replace the F with the new grade. Enter the grades as your grade card shows them.
