CGPA to Percentage Calculator
Convert CGPA or SGPA to percentage with the formula your board or university uses — CBSE ×9.5, AICTE, VTU, AKTU, Anna University, Mumbai University, GTU or SPPU — or a 4, 5 or 7-point GPA, and compare every formula side by side.
How it works
CBSE: % = CGPA × 9.5 · AICTE, VTU (2015–2018), AKTU: % = (CGPA − 0.75) × 10 · Anna University, VTU (2021+): % = CGPA × 10 · Mumbai University (engineering): % = 7.1 × CGPI + 11 · GTU: % = (CPI − 0.5) × 10 · SPPU: a separate line per grade band
There is no single national CGPA-to-percentage rule in India. Each board or university sets its own formula. CBSE took the average marks of students in each grade band and found they were about 9.5 times the grade point, so its rule is CGPA × 9.5, which UGC and many general universities, including Delhi University, also use. AICTE’s rule for technical programmes subtracts 0.75 first, and VTU’s 2015–2018 schemes and AKTU follow it. Anna University and VTU’s 2021 scheme simply multiply by 10. GTU subtracts 0.5, Mumbai University’s engineering faculty uses the regression line 7.1 × CGPI + 11, and SPPU uses a separate line for each grade band from its Circular 332/2020. Pick your university and the calculator shows the percentage, the working, the CBSE grade band and the division. It also compares every formula for your CGPA and gives a conversion table, with an optional figure for equivalent marks. For a 4, 5 or 7-point GPA it uses a straight proportion. If your grade card prints a formula, that formula is the one employers and admissions offices expect.
Worked example
A CGPA of 8.2 under the CBSE rule is 8.2 × 9.5 = 77.9%, which is a distinction. Under the AICTE/VTU 2015–2018 rule it is (8.2 − 0.75) × 10 = 74.5%, first division. Anna University gives 8.2 × 10 = 82%, and Mumbai University engineering gives 7.1 × 8.2 + 11 = 69.22%. On SPPU’s table 8.2 falls in grade A (6.75–8.25), so 10 × 8.2 − 7.5 = 74.5%. Out of 500 total marks, 77.9% equals 389.5 marks.

Frequently asked questions
Which formula should I use?
Use the one your university or board publishes, which is usually printed on the back of the grade card or in the academic regulations. CBSE uses × 9.5, AICTE-affiliated engineering colleges often use (CGPA − 0.75) × 10, Anna University uses × 10, and Mumbai University engineering uses 7.1 × CGPI + 11.
Is the 9.5 factor exact?
It is an approximation from CBSE’s grade-band averages. A CGPA of 10 gives 95%, not 100%, which is intended.
How do I convert VTU CGPA to percentage?
For students admitted under the 2015, 2017 or 2018 schemes, subtract 0.75 and multiply by 10: 8.0 becomes 72.5%. For the 2021 scheme onward, VTU multiplies by 10, so 8.0 becomes 80%. Your subject codes (18CS…, 21CS…) show your scheme.
How does SPPU convert CGPA to percentage?
SPPU’s Circular 332/2020 gives a separate equation for each grade band. For example, 6.75–8.25 (grade A) uses 10 × CGPA − 7.5 and 8.25–9.50 (A+) uses 12 × CGPA − 25. The calculator picks the right band for you.
Can I convert SGPA the same way?
Yes. Universities apply the same formula to a semester SGPA, though the percentage on your final transcript is based on the overall CGPA.
Which formula for WES or foreign applications?
WES and most foreign universities evaluate your transcript course by course. For self-reported forms, use your university’s published formula and attach the notification or an equivalence certificate.
