Percentage to GPA Calculator

Convert a percentage or a mark out of any total to a 4.0-scale GPA and letter grade. Pick the US plus/minus table, the College Board scale, flat 10-point bands, a WES-style scale or the India ÷ 9.5 rule, compare all scales side by side, or paste several courses for a credit-weighted GPA.

How it works

US plus/minus: A/A+ 93–100 → 4.0, A− 90 → 3.7, B+ 87 → 3.3, B 83 → 3.0 … D− 60 → 0.7, F < 60 → 0 · College Board: A 90, B 80, C 70, D 65 · Flat: A 90, B 80, C 70, D 60 · WES-style: A 60+, B 50–59, C 35–49 · India: GPA = (% ÷ 9.5) × 0.4 · Proportion: GPA = % ÷ 25 · Several courses: GPA = Σ(points × credits) ÷ Σ credits

There is no single official way to turn a percentage into a GPA, because each school decides which percentage earns which letter. This calculator gives you the common tables side by side. The US plus/minus scale splits every letter into 3–4 point bands (B+ from 87%, B from 83%, B− from 80%) and is the usual high-school and college table; you can let an A+ count as 4.3 if your school does. The College Board guide uses whole letters with D starting at 65%, and many schools use flat 10-point blocks. For marks from India, credential evaluators such as WES read 60% and above (first class) as an A, and Indian universities often quote the CBSE factor in reverse: divide by 9.5 to get a 10-point CGPA, then multiply by 0.4 for a 4.0 figure. A straight proportion (% ÷ 25) is shown for comparison only. If your mark is out of 10, 20 or a paper total, set “Score is out of” and it is turned into a percentage first. Paste several courses with their credits to get a credit-weighted GPA in one go.

Worked example

An 88% on the US plus/minus scale falls in the 87–89% band, a B+ worth 3.3 points. The same 88% is an A− (3.71) under the India rule (88 ÷ 9.5 = 9.26 CGPA, × 0.4 = 3.71), a B (3.0) on the College Board and flat scales, and an A (4.0) on the WES-style scale. For two courses, “88, 3” and “75, 4”, the US table gives B+ (3.3) and C (2.0): (3.3 × 3 + 2.0 × 4) ÷ 7 = 2.56.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the same percentage give different GPAs?

Because the scales draw the letter boundaries in different places. 85% is a B (3.0) on the US plus/minus table but an A (4.0) where 60% and above counts as first class. Use the table your school or the receiving university names; the comparison table shows how far apart the scales are.

Does an A+ count as more than 4.0?

On most US 4.0 scales, no — A+ and A both cap at 4.0. Some schools award 4.3 for an A+; switch on “Count A+ as 4.3” under More options if yours does.

How do I convert Indian percentage marks to a US GPA?

Two methods are common. Universities often quote CGPA = % ÷ 9.5 and GPA = CGPA × 0.4, so 75% is about 3.16. Credential evaluators such as WES instead treat 60% and above as an A, so 75% is a 4.0. The evaluator your target university uses decides which one counts.

My grade is out of 10 or 20, not 100. Can I still convert it?

Yes. Set “Score is out of” to 10 or 20 (or your paper’s total marks) and enter the mark as it is. 8.8 out of 10 becomes 88% before it is converted.

How do I turn several percentages into one GPA?

Paste them into “Several courses”, one per line with the credits, such as “88, 3”. Each course is converted on the scale you chose, multiplied by its credits, and the total is divided by all credits.
