College GPA Calculator
Compute your college GPA on the 4.0 scale from a list of letter grades and their credit hours, credit-weighted the way registrars do it.
How it works
GPA = Σ(grade points × credit hours) ÷ Σ(credit hours)
A college GPA is a credit-weighted average, not a plain average. Each course contributes quality points equal to its grade points times its credit hours, so a 4-credit course counts more than a 1-credit course of the same grade. Dividing total quality points by total credit hours gives the GPA on the 4.0 scale that transcripts report.
Worked example
Grades A, B, C, A (4.0, 3.0, 2.0, 4.0) with 3, 4, 3, 3 credits give quality points 12 + 12 + 6 + 12 = 42 over 13 credit hours. GPA = 42 ÷ 13 = 3.23.
Frequently asked questions
Why weight by credit hours instead of averaging grades?
A 4-credit lecture represents far more of your workload than a 1-credit lab, so it should move your GPA more. Weighting by credits reflects how much of your degree each grade actually accounts for.
What are quality points?
Quality points are grade points × credit hours for one course — the raw currency of a GPA. Add them across every course and divide by total credits to get the GPA. A 3-credit A is worth 12 quality points (4.0 × 3).
How do withdrawals and pass/fail courses count?
A W usually carries no grade points and no credit toward GPA, and a pass/fail Pass earns credit but no quality points. Leave both out of these lists so they neither help nor hurt the average.
