How it works

semester GPA = Σ(grade points × credit hours this term) ÷ Σ(credit hours this term)

A semester GPA is your term-only GPA: the same credit-weighted average as a cumulative GPA, but limited to the courses you took this semester. Schools use it for Dean’s-list and academic-standing decisions each term, and it is the number you fold into your running cumulative GPA once grades post.

Worked example

Grades A, A-, B+, B (4.0, 3.7, 3.3, 3.0) with 4, 3, 3, 3 credits give quality points 16 + 11.1 + 9.9 + 9.0 = 46.0 over 13 credits. Semester GPA = 46.0 ÷ 13 = 3.54.

Frequently asked questions

How is semester GPA different from cumulative GPA?

Semester GPA covers only this term’s courses; cumulative GPA averages every term you have completed. A strong semester raises the cumulative number, but the more credits you already have, the less one term moves it.

What GPA makes the Dean’s list?

A 3.5 semester GPA is the most common threshold, though some schools set it at 3.7 and often require a minimum full-time credit load. Check your registrar’s exact rule.

Do I include the credits or just the grades?

Include credits — a semester GPA is credit-weighted, so a 4-credit A counts more than a 1-credit A. Averaging the letters alone would give a different, incorrect number.
