How it works

weighted grade = Σ(score × weight) ÷ Σ(weight)

A weighted grade multiplies each category score by its weight, adds them up, and divides by the total weight. Because the divisor is the sum of the weights, the categories do not have to total exactly 100% — the calculator normalises them for you. The heaviest category moves the final grade the most, which is why a strong exam can rescue a weak homework average when the exam is weighted heavily.

Worked example

Scores 90, 85, 80 with weights 40, 30, 30: numerator = 90×40 + 85×30 + 80×30 = 3,600 + 2,550 + 2,400 = 8,550, divided by total weight 100 = 85.5% — a B.

Frequently asked questions

Do the weights need to add up to 100?

No. This calculator divides by whatever the weights total, so 40/30/30 and 4/3/3 give the same answer. If your weights fall short of 100%, that just means some part of the course is still ungraded.

How is this different from a plain average?

A plain average treats every score equally. A weighted average lets a 40%-weighted final count far more than a 10%-weighted quiz, matching how most syllabi actually compute the course grade.

Can I mix points and percentages?

Keep the scores consistent — all percentages or all as points out of the same maximum. For weights, use each category’s share of the course; the tool normalises them, so relative sizes are what matter.
