How it works

class average = Σ(scores) ÷ number of students · median = middle value of the sorted scores

The class average is the mean of every student’s score, a quick gauge of how a test or assignment went overall. Pairing it with the median matters: when a few very low scores drag the mean down, the median — the middle value — often better reflects the typical student. The "above average" count hints at the shape of the distribution, since a symmetric spread puts roughly half the class on each side of the mean.

Worked example

Scores of 85, 92, 78, 66, 74 and 88 sum to 483 over 6 students, so the average is 483 ÷ 6 = 80.5. The sorted middle two are 78 and 85, giving a median of 81.5, and three students scored above the 80.5 mean.

Frequently asked questions

How do I skip an empty slot?

Leave it at −1. Any score below zero is ignored, so you can use as few or as many of the ten slots as you need without a blank throwing off the average.

When should I trust the median over the mean?

When the scores are skewed — a handful of very low or very high results pull the mean toward them, while the median stays at the middle student. If the mean and median are close, the class is fairly symmetric and either works.

Can I average percentages and points together?

Only if they are on the same scale. Convert everything to the same units — all percentages or all raw points — before entering, or the average will be meaningless.
