How it works

percentage = points earned ÷ points possible × 100

A percentage grade is just the share of available points you captured, so it works for whole questions or fractional partial credit equally well. Because each point is worth 100 ÷ (points possible) percent, the same one-point slip matters far more on a 10-point quiz than on a 200-point exam. The letter shown uses the simple 10-point bands; schools with plus/minus or curved scales will map the same percentage differently.

Worked example

You earn 42 of 50 points: 42 ÷ 50 × 100 = 84.0%. That is a B, you lost 8 points, and each point was worth 2% of the grade.

Frequently asked questions

Does partial credit change the math?

No. Enter your total earned points (including any half-points) as "points earned" and the maximum as "points possible" — the ratio handles partial credit automatically.

How is this different from a test score calculator?

A pure test-score tool usually counts whole right and wrong answers. This one works directly in points, so it also fits essays, projects and rubrics where credit is not all-or-nothing.

Can the percentage go above 100%?

Yes, if extra credit lets you earn more than the points possible. The calculator will report the higher percentage rather than capping it at 100%.
