How it works

Clinch = (games + 1) − your wins − chaser losses · Tragic = (games + 1) − chaser wins − your losses · both floored at 0

A playoff race has two mirror-image numbers. The clinch (magic) number counts your wins plus the chaser’s losses needed to lock the spot; the tragic (elimination) number counts the chaser’s wins plus your losses that would knock you out. Both fall by one with each relevant result, and whichever reaches zero first settles the race.

Worked example

Over 82 games you sit 45–25 and the first team out is 40–30. Your clinch number is 82 + 1 − 45 − 30 = 8, while your tragic number is 82 + 1 − 40 − 25 = 18 — you are closer to clinching than to elimination.

Frequently asked questions

What is a tragic number?

It is the elimination counterpart of the magic number: the count of chaser wins plus your losses that would eliminate you. When it reaches zero, you can no longer finish ahead of that team.

Can both numbers reach zero?

No. As one shrinks the other grows, so exactly one race outcome is settled first. If your clinch number hits zero you are in; if your tragic number hits zero you are out.

Does this handle ties or overtime losses?

It uses a simple wins-and-losses model. Leagues that award points for overtime losses (like the NHL) are better modelled with the points-needed calculator.
