Points Needed to Make Playoffs Calculator
Work out how many more points — and wins — a team needs to reach a playoff target, plus the points-per-game pace required.
How it works
Points needed = target − current · Wins needed = ceil(points needed ÷ points per win) · Pace = points needed ÷ games remaining
Playoff races in points-based leagues come down to a simple gap: how many points separate you from the qualifying line, and whether enough games remain to close it. Dividing that gap by the points awarded for a win converts it into a rough number of wins, while dividing by games left gives the per-game pace you must sustain. If the maximum still attainable is below the gap, qualification is already mathematically impossible.
Worked example
You have 45 points, need 90 to qualify, and 20 games remain at 3 points per win. You need 45 more points — about 15 wins — a pace of 45 ÷ 20 = 2.25 points per game, and the 60 points still on offer keep it attainable.
Frequently asked questions
How many wins do I actually need?
Divide the points gap by the points awarded for a win and round up. Draws or overtime points can close part of the gap too, so the win figure is an upper-bound guide rather than an exact requirement.
What points target should I enter?
Use the historical points total that typically secures the last playoff spot in your league — often around 40 points in a 38-game soccer season or roughly 95 in an 82-game hockey season.
What does “max still attainable” tell me?
It is games remaining times points per win — the most points you could still earn. If that plus your current points falls short of the target, the spot is already unreachable.
