How it works

sheets = ceil( area × (1 + waste%) ÷ sheet area ) · area = length × width

Plywood and OSB are sold as whole panels, so the raw area is padded for waste and then divided by one panel’s coverage and rounded up. A standard 4×8 sheet covers 32 square feet; oriented-strand board and subfloor panels come the same size. The waste percentage covers off-cuts, the rip along the last course, and openings you cannot reuse.

Worked example

A 24 × 16 ft floor is 384 sq ft. Adding 10% gives 422 sq ft; at 32 sq ft per 4×8 sheet that is 422 ÷ 32 = 13.2, rounded up to 14 sheets. At $45 each the plywood runs $630.

Frequently asked questions

How many square feet is a sheet of plywood?

A standard 4 × 8 ft sheet is 32 square feet. Longer 4 × 12 panels used for shear walls and tall lifts cover 48 square feet. Thickness (7/16, 1/2, 5/8, 3/4 in) changes the price and strength but not the face area.

How much waste should I add for plywood?

About 10% for a simple rectangular floor or wall, and 15% or more for a cut-up layout with many openings, hips or diagonal runs. Panels rip cleanly, so most waste is the last narrow strip on each course.

Should sheets run a certain direction?

On floors and roofs, run the long edge across the joists or rafters and stagger the end joints like brickwork. That ties the framing together and keeps the seams off a single member.
