Protein Powder Scoops Calculator
Work out how many scoops of protein powder you need to top up from the food you already eat to your daily protein target.
How it works
Gap = target − food-protein · Scoops = ceil(gap ÷ protein per scoop)
Protein powder is a top-up, not a base — the smart move is to count what you already eat and only supplement the shortfall. Divide the remaining grams by the protein in one scoop and round up, since you can only add whole scoops. If food already covers your target the calculator returns zero, because extra powder beyond your goal offers no added benefit.
Worked example
With a 140 g target and 90 g from food, you are 50 g short. At 24 g per scoop, 50 ÷ 24 = 2.08 scoops, which rounds up to 3 scoops delivering 72 g — comfortably closing the gap with a little to spare.
Frequently asked questions
How much protein is in one scoop?
Most whey and plant powders deliver 20–30 g per scoop, but it varies by brand and scoop size — always read the nutrition panel rather than assuming.
Can I split scoops through the day?
Yes. Spreading protein across meals is fine and may aid absorption, but total daily intake is what matters most for muscle maintenance and growth.
Is more protein always better?
No. Beyond your daily target the extra is simply used for energy or excreted. This calculator stops at your goal for that reason.
