How it works

Adult weight = current weight ÷ fraction of adult weight reached (from breed-size growth curve)

Puppies grow along a predictable S-curve, and the useful fact is what fraction of adult weight they have reached by a given age — which depends heavily on breed size. Small breeds mature fast, hitting most of their adult weight by 6–8 months, while giant breeds grow for well over a year and are only around 40% grown at four months. Dividing current weight by that fraction projects the adult size. Treat it as a ballpark: individual variation, spay/neuter timing and nutrition all shift the final number.

Worked example

A medium-breed puppy weighing 4 kg at 16 weeks has reached about 52% of adult weight, so its projected adult weight is 4 ÷ 0.52 ≈ 7.7 kg (about 17 lb).

Frequently asked questions

How accurate is this projection?

For a purebred of known size class it is usually within 10–15% of the true adult weight, and it gets more accurate the older the puppy — a 9-month estimate is far tighter than an 8-week one. It is a planning guide, not a guarantee.

I don’t know the breed size — what do I pick?

Paw size and the size of the parents are the best clues; large paws and a big-boned frame point to a larger class. If genuinely unsure, run the calculation for two adjacent classes to bracket the likely adult range.

Why do giant breeds take so long to finish growing?

They have far more mass to build, so their growth plates stay open longer — often 18–24 months. That slower schedule is also why large and giant puppies need carefully controlled growth diets to protect developing joints.
