Quarts, Pints & Gallons Converter
Convert between US gallons, quarts, pints, cups, fluid ounces and litres in one step for scaling liquids, stocks and batches.
How it works
1 gallon = 4 quarts = 8 pints = 16 cups = 128 fl oz = 3.785412 L (US liquid measure)
US liquid volumes form a simple doubling ladder: a gallon is 4 quarts, a quart is 2 pints, a pint is 2 cups, and a cup is 8 fluid ounces. Everything here converts through the gallon as a base. These are US liquid measures — the UK (imperial) gallon is about 20% larger (4.546 L) and its pint is 20 fl oz rather than 16, so recipes and container sizes are not interchangeable across systems.
Worked example
You need to scale a stock recipe written for 3 quarts into gallons. Since 4 quarts make a gallon, 3 quarts = 3 ÷ 4 = 0.75 gallon, which is also 6 pints, 12 cups, 96 fluid ounces, or about 2.84 litres.
Frequently asked questions
How many quarts are in a gallon?
Four. A US gallon is 4 quarts, and each quart is 2 pints, so a gallon is also 8 pints, 16 cups or 128 fluid ounces.
Are US and UK gallons the same?
No. A US gallon is 3.785 litres; an imperial (UK) gallon is 4.546 litres, roughly 20% larger. The imperial pint is 20 fl oz versus the US 16 fl oz, so always check which system a recipe or container uses.
How many cups in a pint and a quart?
A pint is 2 cups and a quart is 4 cups. A handy memory aid: 1 gallon has 16 cups, laid out as 4 quarts of 4 cups each.
