Milliliters to Cups Converter
Convert millilitres to US cups, tablespoons and fluid ounces using the exact 236.588 ml per cup definition.
How it works
US cups = ml ÷ 236.5882 · Tablespoons = ml ÷ 14.7868 · Fluid ounces = ml ÷ 29.5735
A US legal cup is 240 ml but the customary cup used in recipes is 236.588 ml (8 US fluid ounces), and this converter uses the customary value. Because these are all volume units, the conversion is the same whether you are pouring water, milk or oil — only the weight changes with the liquid. Note the metric cup (250 ml) used in Australia and much of Europe is slightly larger, so a recipe in metric cups yields a little more per cup.
Worked example
You have 500 ml of stock and the recipe lists cups. Dividing by 236.588 gives 500 ÷ 236.588 = 2.11 US cups, which is also 500 ÷ 14.7868 = 33.8 tablespoons or 500 ÷ 29.5735 = 16.9 fluid ounces.
Frequently asked questions
How many millilitres are in a cup?
A US customary cup is 236.588 ml (8 fluid ounces). The US "legal" cup used on nutrition labels is 240 ml, and the metric cup is 250 ml. This tool uses the 236.588 ml recipe cup.
Is 250 ml the same as one cup?
Only for a metric cup. 250 ml is about 1.057 US customary cups — close enough for most cooking but not exact, which can matter in baking where you may want the extra 13 ml accounted for.
Does the ingredient change the answer?
No — millilitres and cups are both volume, so 240 ml of honey and 240 ml of water are both the same number of cups. Their weights differ greatly, but their volumes do not.
