How it works

One part = amount ÷ (sum of ratio terms) · Share = one part × its ratio term

Sharing in a ratio means slicing the amount into equal “parts,” then giving each person as many parts as their ratio term. Add the ratio terms to find how many parts there are in total, divide the amount by that to value one part, and multiply back out. The shares always add up to the original amount, which is the quickest way to check the answer.

Worked example

Split $1,000 in the ratio 2:3:5. The terms add to 2 + 3 + 5 = 10 parts, so one part is 1000 ÷ 10 = $100. The shares are 2×100 = $200, 3×100 = $300 and 5×100 = $500 — together exactly $1,000.

Frequently asked questions

How do I check the shares are right?

Add them up — they must equal the original amount. If they do not, a ratio term was mistyped or a share miscalculated.

Can I share in a ratio with more than two parts?

Yes. Enter as many colon-separated terms as you need, like 2:3:5 or 1:1:2:4. The method is identical: total the terms, value one part, then multiply.

What if the ratio does not divide the amount evenly?

The shares can be fractional amounts of money, which is normal. This calculator keeps the exact decimals; round to the nearest cent only at the very end if you must, and adjust one share so the total still matches.
