Recommended TV Size Calculator
Find the ideal TV screen size for how far away you sit, using the SMPTE and THX field-of-view guidelines for 4K and 1080p sets.
How it works
Recommended diagonal = distance (in) ÷ factor · 4K uses ≈1.5 (range 1.2–1.9) · 1080p uses ≈1.9 (range 1.6–2.5)
Recommended size comes from how much of your field of view the screen should fill. SMPTE suggests the screen span about a 30° field of view for a cinematic feel, while the more immersive THX target is roughly 40°. Because 4K screens pack four times the pixels of 1080p, you can sit closer without seeing individual pixels, so the same distance justifies a noticeably larger 4K set.
Worked example
From 8 feet (96 inches) with a 4K TV, the recommended diagonal is 96 ÷ 1.5 = 64 inches, with a comfortable-to-immersive range of about 50 to 80 inches.
Frequently asked questions
Can I sit closer to a 4K TV?
Yes. The higher pixel density of 4K means individual pixels are not visible at closer distances, so a 4K set can be larger — or viewed nearer — than a 1080p set at the same seat.
Is a bigger TV always better?
Only up to a point. If the screen fills much more than a 40° field of view you have to move your eyes and head to follow the action, which becomes tiring. The recommended size keeps the whole picture comfortably in view.
How do I measure viewing distance?
Measure in a straight line from where your eyes sit on the sofa to the wall where the TV will hang. Enter that in feet and the calculator converts it to inches internally.
