How it works

4K distance = 1.2–1.6 × screen diagonal · 1080p distance = 1.5–2.5 × diagonal

4K packs four times the pixels of 1080p, so you can sit much closer before individual pixels show — and sitting closer is what makes the picture immersive. The 1.2–1.6× band tracks the common industry guidance (roughly a 30–40° viewing angle). Sit farther than the range and a 4K TV looks no sharper than an HD one.

Worked example

A 65-inch 4K TV: 65 × 1.2 = 78 in and 65 × 1.6 = 104 in, so about 6.5 to 8.7 feet from the screen. The same size at 1080p wants 8 to 13.5 feet.

Frequently asked questions

We sit 10 feet away — what size should we buy?

120 inches ÷ 1.6 to ÷ 1.2 suggests roughly a 75–100 inch 4K screen. Most people buy one size too small for their room; distance-first shopping avoids that.

Is 8K worth it at these distances?

Almost never — at 1.2–1.6× the diagonal, normal eyes can’t resolve the extra pixels. 8K only differentiates itself when sitting unusually close to a very large screen.

Does mounting height matter too?

Yes — eye level should hit the center (or slightly above center) of the screen when seated. High over-the-fireplace mounts force a neck angle that gets old fast.
