Reference Angle Calculator
Find the reference angle of any angle in degrees or radians, with the quadrant, the rule used (180° − θ, θ − 180°, 360° − θ) and the signs of sin, cos and tan.
How it works
Reduce θ to [0°, 360°) · Quadrant I: θ′ = θ · II: θ′ = 180° − θ · III: θ′ = θ − 180° · IV: θ′ = 360° − θ (in radians use π and 2π)
The reference angle is the acute angle (between 0° and 90°) that the terminal side of θ makes with the x-axis. First reduce θ to its coterminal angle between 0° and 360°, then apply the rule for its quadrant. Trig values of θ equal those of the reference angle up to a sign, and the sign comes from the quadrant (All Students Take Calculus: all positive in I, sine in II, tangent in III, cosine in IV).
Worked example
For θ = 225°: it is already between 0° and 360° and lies in Quadrant III, so θ′ = 225° − 180° = 45° (π/4 ≈ 0.785398 rad). In Quadrant III sine and cosine are negative and tangent is positive, so sin 225° = −sin 45° and tan 225° = tan 45° = 1.

Frequently asked questions
What is a reference angle?
It is the smallest positive angle between the terminal side of an angle and the x-axis. It is always between 0° and 90° (0 and π/2) and lets you evaluate any trig function from first-quadrant values.
How do I find the reference angle of a negative angle?
Add 360° until the angle is between 0° and 360°, then use the quadrant rule. For −150°: −150° + 360° = 210°, which is in Quadrant III, so the reference angle is 210° − 180° = 30°.
How do I find a reference angle in radians?
Use π instead of 180° and 2π instead of 360°. For 5π/6 (Quadrant II) the reference angle is π − 5π/6 = π/6. Select “Multiples of π” and enter 0.8333 or use radians.
What is the reference angle of 90°, 180° or 270°?
Angles on an axis (quadrantal angles) have no quadrant. Measured to the x-axis, 180° gives 0° and 90° or 270° give 90°; many textbooks simply say these angles do not have a reference angle.
