How it works

Meal = base-by-cuisine × portion factor + drink + appetizer + dessert

Restaurant portions run far larger than home cooking, and oil, butter and cheese add calories you never see. This estimator starts from a typical full entrée for each cuisine, scales it for how much you actually eat, then adds the usual extras — a soda or cocktail, a shared appetizer and dessert — which together often equal a second meal. Treat the number as a planning ballpark, since the same dish can swing 300+ calories between kitchens.

Worked example

A standard steakhouse entrée is about 1,200 kcal. Add a cocktail (180), a shared appetizer (350) and dessert (450) and the meal reaches roughly 2,180 kcal — an entire day of calories in one sitting.

Frequently asked questions

Why are restaurant meals so much higher than the same dish at home?

Restaurants cook for flavor and generous portions: extra oil, butter, salt and sugar, plus plate sizes that are often two to three times a sensible serving. The cooking fat alone can add several hundred calories you would not use at home.

How can I cut the total without skipping the meal?

Skip or split the appetizer and dessert, drink water instead of soda or alcohol, and box half the entrée at the start. Those three moves routinely remove 700–900 calories from the estimate above.

Are these numbers exact?

No. They are averages for each cuisine and portion level; a specific restaurant dish can vary by hundreds of calories. Use published menu counts when a chain provides them.
