How it works

TDEE = RMR × activity factor · Active energy = TDEE − RMR · Resting share = RMR ÷ TDEE × 100

Your total daily energy expenditure (TDEE) is your resting metabolic rate multiplied by an activity factor that accounts for movement, exercise and the thermic effect of food. Subtracting resting energy from TDEE isolates the active portion — the calories attributable to being up and moving rather than just staying alive. For most people the resting rate dominates, which is why raising activity has a limited but real effect on total burn.

Worked example

With an RMR of 1,600 kcal and a lightly active factor of 1.375, TDEE is 1,600 × 1.375 = 2,200 kcal. Active energy is 2,200 − 1,600 = 600 kcal, so resting energy is 73% of the total and activity is 27%.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between RMR and BMR?

They are very close: BMR is measured under stricter conditions (fully rested, fasted, in a lab), while RMR is measured under slightly more relaxed conditions and is usually a little higher. For everyday planning they are used interchangeably.

Why is resting energy such a big share?

Keeping your organs, brain and cells running around the clock is metabolically expensive. Unless you train or work very hard physically, resting energy typically accounts for 60–75% of daily burn.

How do I raise my active energy?

Both structured exercise and everyday movement (walking, standing, fidgeting — collectively NEAT) increase active energy. Because resting rate is hard to change much, activity is the most controllable lever for total expenditure.
