How it works

Run kcal = VO₂ × weight × time (ACSM, VO₂ = 0.2·speed + 3.5) · Bike time = run kcal ÷ bike kcal/hour

To compare two very different activities fairly, both are costed in calories. Running energy comes from the ACSM walking/running equation, which ties oxygen use to pace, while cycling energy comes from a power model of the resistances at your chosen speed. Setting the two equal reveals the ride that matches your run — typically a bike distance several times longer, because cycling is far more mechanically efficient per kilometre.

Worked example

A 75 kg runner covering 5 km at 6:00/km uses VO₂ ≈ 36.8 ml/kg/min for 30 minutes, about 395 kcal. At 25 km/h a bike burns roughly 345 kcal/hour, so matching 395 kcal takes about 1:09 of riding — near 28.7 km, a bike-to-run ratio close to 5.7 : 1.

Frequently asked questions

Why is the equivalent bike distance so much longer than the run?

Cycling is mechanically efficient: rolling and gliding cost little energy per kilometre compared with the repeated impact and vertical motion of running. Burning the same calories therefore takes several times more distance on the bike — commonly a ratio between 3 : 1 and 6 : 1 depending on the two speeds.

Does terrain change the answer?

Yes. This assumes flat riding; hills, headwinds or a faster, more aggressive pace all raise cycling calories per hour and shorten the equivalent distance. The comparison is best read as a flat-road baseline rather than an exact figure.
