How it works

Snack budget = daily × (1 − meal%) · Per snack = snack budget ÷ number of snacks

Snacking derails plans not because snacks are forbidden but because they are unbudgeted. This calculator carves out a snack allowance as the part of your day not spent on meals, then divides it by how many snacks you plan, giving a per-snack calorie target to shop and portion against. Setting the number in advance turns grazing into a decision instead of an accident.

Worked example

On 2,000 kcal with 80% from meals, snacks get 400 kcal. Split across 2 snacks that is 200 kcal each — say an apple with peanut butter, and a yogurt.

Frequently asked questions

How many calories should a snack be?

It depends on your budget, but 150–250 calories is a common target that curbs hunger without crowding out meals. This calculator sets the number from your own daily total and meal split.

Are snacks bad for weight loss?

Not inherently. Planned, protein- or fiber-rich snacks can steady hunger and prevent overeating at meals. Problems arise when snacks are unplanned and their calories go untracked.

What if I have zero planned snacks?

Then the leftover budget simply folds back into your meals. Some people prefer three larger meals with no snacks; the method works either way as long as the daily total holds.
