Pass Completion Percentage Calculator
Divide completed passes by attempts for pass completion percentage, and see how many misplaced passes it takes to move the number — the backbone of possession football.
How it works
Pass completion % = passes completed ÷ passes attempted × 100
Pass completion percentage is the share of a player’s or team’s passes that reach a teammate. Possession-based sides routinely post team figures above 85%, but the number needs context: a centre-back recycling the ball sideways will complete far more passes than a forward attempting risky through-balls into the box. High completion is not automatically good — it can also mean a team is passing safely and creating little.
Worked example
A midfielder completes 42 of 50 attempted passes. Completion % = 42 ÷ 50 = 84.0%, meaning 8 passes were misplaced.
Frequently asked questions
What is a good pass completion percentage?
Elite possession teams often exceed 88% as a team, while a typical side lands in the high 70s to low 80s. For individuals it varies by role: deep-lying playmakers routinely top 90%, while forwards attempting risky passes complete far fewer.
Does a high completion percentage mean a team played well?
Not on its own. Completing many low-risk sideways and backward passes inflates the figure without creating chances. Analysts pair it with progressive passes and passes into the final third to judge whether possession was actually productive.
Are crosses and long balls counted?
They are counted as attempted passes and lower completion percentage because they are harder to complete. Many analysts also break out short, medium and long passing separately so completion is judged fairly by distance and difficulty.
