How it works

Rolls = ⌈area × (1 + waste%) ÷ coverage per roll⌉ · Pallets = ⌈rolls ÷ rolls per pallet⌉

Sod is sold by the roll (or slab) and by the pallet, so first find the lawn area, add a waste allowance for the trimming and fitting around curves and beds, then divide by what one roll covers. A common roll is 2 × 5 ft = 10 sq ft, and a pallet is often around 50 rolls or 500 sq ft, though sizes vary by supplier. Order and lay sod the same day it is cut — it is a living product that yellows fast on the pallet in warm weather.

Worked example

A 40 × 30 ft lawn is 1,200 sq ft. Adding 10% waste gives 1,320 sq ft; at 10 sq ft per roll that is 132 rolls, which at 50 rolls per pallet is 3 pallets.

Frequently asked questions

How much sod do I need for my yard?

Measure the length and width of each area, multiply for square footage, add them up, then add about 5–10% for waste around curves and edges. Divide by the coverage of one roll to get the roll count.

How big is a roll of sod?

A typical roll is 2 ft by 5 ft, covering 10 sq ft. Some suppliers sell slabs (about 16″ × 24″, roughly 2.7 sq ft) or big rolls for large properties, so confirm the size before you calculate.

How soon should I lay sod after delivery?

Lay it within 24 hours, ideally the same day. Stacked sod heats up and dries out quickly, so schedule delivery for when your soil is prepped and you are ready to install and water immediately.
