Solve for X Proportion Calculator: cross-multiplication with steps

Solve a proportion A/B = C/D for the unknown x in any position by cross-multiplication, or solve an inverse proportion. Shows x as a decimal and an exact fraction, the cross-products, a check and a table of equivalent values.

How it works

Direct: A/B = C/D ⇒ A × D = B × C ⇒ x = (product of the two known diagonal terms) ÷ (the known term on x’s diagonal); e.g. A/B = C/x ⇒ x = B × C ÷ A · Inverse: A × B = C × D ⇒ e.g. x = A × B ÷ C

Two equal ratios form a proportion, A/B = C/D. Multiplying across the diagonals always gives equal products, A × D = B × C, so when three terms are known the fourth follows: multiply the two known terms on one diagonal and divide by the known term that shares a diagonal with x. Choose where x sits; the default is the classic A/B = C/x, the “rule of three”. In a direct proportion both quantities move together: 3 kg costs 45, so 7 kg costs 45 × 7 ÷ 3 = 105. In an inverse proportion one quantity rises as the other falls, so the products are equal instead: if 4 workers take 12 days, 6 workers take 4 × 12 ÷ 6 = 8 days. For the inverse case, enter the first pair as A and B and the second pair as C and D. When all the known terms are whole numbers the calculator also gives x as an exact fraction (and mixed number), checks the answer by comparing the two ratios or products, and lists equivalent pairs with the same ratio. Denominators B and D cannot be zero.

Worked example

For 3/4 = 9/x (the default): cross-multiply to get 3 × x = 4 × 9 = 36, and divide by 3 to get x = 12. Check: 3 ÷ 4 = 0.75 and 9 ÷ 12 = 0.75, so 3/4 = 9/12, and the scale factor from A to C is × 3. If instead the proportion were inverse, 3 × 4 = 9 × x would give x = 12 ÷ 9 = 4/3 = 1 1/3.

Frequently asked questions

How do I solve a proportion for x?

Cross-multiply and divide. For 5/8 = x/24, 8 × x = 5 × 24 = 120, so x = 120 ÷ 8 = 15. For 2/15 = 18/x, 2 × x = 15 × 18 = 270, so x = 135.

What if x is in the denominator on the left, like 5/x = 10/16?

The same rule works in any position: 5 × 16 = 10 × x, so 80 = 10x and x = 8. Choose “A/x = C/D” in the first box to solve it directly.

What is the difference between direct and inverse proportion?

In a direct proportion both quantities grow together and the ratios are equal (A/B = C/D). In an inverse proportion one grows while the other shrinks and the products are equal (A × B = C × D). Twice as many workers finishing a job in half the time is inverse.

What is the rule of three?

It is the everyday name for solving a direct proportion with three known values: if A goes with B, then C goes with x = B × C ÷ A. If 5 litres cost 110, then 8 litres cost 110 × 8 ÷ 5 = 176.

How do I check my answer?

Put x back in and compare: divide each top by its bottom (both ratios must match) or compare the cross-products (A × D must equal B × C). For 4/10 = 6/15, 4 × 15 = 60 and 10 × 6 = 60.

Can x be a fraction or a negative number?

Yes. When the known values are whole numbers the calculator shows x as an exact fraction, for example 3/4 = 2/x gives x = 8/3 = 2 2/3. Negative values work too, but no denominator can be zero.
