Spice Shelf-Life Tracker Calculator
Enter when you opened a spice and its type to see its best-by date and whether it is still worth using.
How it works
Best-by = date opened + shelf life · Whole 48 mo · Ground 24 mo · Herbs 18 mo · Blends 24 mo · Extracts 48 mo
Dried spices rarely spoil in a way that makes you sick — they lose potency, so "shelf life" here means how long they stay flavourful after opening. Whole spices hold their volatile oils far longer than ground ones because less surface is exposed to air, and leafy herbs fade fastest. Adding the typical quality window to your open date flags when to smell-test and replace; if a spice has little aroma when you rub it, it is past its useful life regardless of the date.
Worked example
A jar of ground cumin opened on Jan 1, 2026 keeps its best quality about 24 months, giving a best-by of Jan 1, 2028. Whole cumin seeds opened the same day would last to 2030.
Frequently asked questions
Do old spices go bad or just lose flavour?
Dried spices almost never become unsafe — moisture and light degrade their aromatic oils, so they simply taste of less over time. The date here marks flavour, not food safety.
How can I test if a spice is still good?
Rub a pinch between your fingers and smell it. If the aroma is faint or dusty rather than sharp and distinct, its oils have faded and it is time to replace it.
How do I make spices last longer?
Store them cool, dark and airtight — away from the stove and out of direct light. Buying whole spices and grinding as needed extends useful life by years compared with pre-ground.
