How it works

Use-by = date frozen + recommended freezer months (USDA/FDA best-quality windows)

Food stored at 0 °F (−18 °C) stays safe to eat almost indefinitely, so freezer times are about quality, not safety — freezer burn, off-flavours and texture loss set in over months. Fattier foods like bacon and sausage go rancid fastest; lean whole cuts and blanched fruit and vegetables last a year. Adding the recommended window to your freeze date gives a use-by that keeps meals tasting good, and labelling packages with that date is the simplest way to rotate a freezer.

Worked example

Raw ground meat frozen on Aug 1, 2026 keeps its best quality about 4 months, giving a use-by of Dec 1, 2026. A whole chicken frozen the same day would be good to around Aug 2027.

Frequently asked questions

Is food unsafe after these dates?

No — food kept constantly at 0 °F stays safe indefinitely. These windows mark when quality (taste and texture) starts to drop, so eating past them is fine if the food still looks and smells right.

What causes freezer burn?

Air reaching the food’s surface dries and oxidises it, leaving grey, leathery patches. Wrapping tightly, removing air, and using freezer bags rather than store film all slow it down.

Does refreezing thawed food shorten this?

Yes. Refreezing is safe if the food thawed in the fridge and stayed cold, but each cycle costs quality, so the remaining useful time is shorter than the original window.
